Mouse proofing near Chicago is an essential part of homeownership. Whether you have found signs of mice, or you are simply exercising caution, mouse proofing your home and family against these pests is important. If you think you already have mice in or around your home, be on the lookout for these common signs of mice:
Droppings
One of the clearest signs of possible house mice are the droppings they leave behind. This pellet-shaped excrement will typically be brown or black in color. If you only see a few droppings, you should still consult a mouse exterminator, though. Even one or two mice can cause a lot of damage to your health and property.
Gnaw Marks
If holes or tears begin appearing in carpet, upholstery, or insulation, begin looking for mice nests. Soft fabrics and materials are the preferred building materials for mice nests. This also means mice babies may soon appear, and you could have a full-blown mouse infestation on your hands. Keep an eye on your pantry items, as well. Mice and other rodents can eat almost anything. If you notice holes or claw marks in your flour bag or cereal boxes, you may have found another sign of mice.
Odor
Mice can give off a musky odor, as well. If you have been smelling an unpleasant odor in your home, or around typically dark and unused areas of the house, you might have a mouse infestation. Do not ignore an odd smell in your home. It could be a sign of a bigger problem, such as a mouse infestation.
Nests
Aside from actually spotting a mouse, one of the easiest signs of mice will be finding their nests. Mice nests can be found in the walls, attic, and other dark locations around the house. They will often be made up of random bits of fabrics, wood, cardboard, and anything the mice happen to find. Call for mice extermination as soon as possible if you have located a possible nest.
