Prep Your Home for Protection from Mice Invasions this Winter

As temperatures get colder outside, rodents will be looking for warm places to live, and a common place for them to seek shelter is inside of homes. However, you can take steps to prevent mice from residing in your house. 

Store Your Food Correctly

Keep your countertops and other surfaces clear of food residue. If you see crumbs on your floor or anywhere in your home, remove them immediately. You should also keep all your food stored in sealed containers to make them more challenging to get to. This includes any pet food you have in your home which is commonly overlooked. 

Seal Entry Points

It’s crucial to seal off anywhere that mice can get inside. Mice and other rodents are good at squeezing into small gaps. If there are gaps larger than a quarter inch, seal them. 

Check your window screens for tears and repair them immediately. Seal any cracks in your walls or foundation with wire mesh. Check your plumbing pipes for gaps around them and fill them with mesh and caulk. If you have a chimney, add a cap because mice are great climbers and can enter your home that way. 

Remove Clutter

Mice and other rodents thrive in cluttered areas because of all the convenient hiding spots. This is especially true in less-inhabited spaces of your home, such as basements, attics, and garages. Clear out any old paper products and other unneeded clutter. Pick up clothes from the floor. Remove clusters of cardboard boxes. Keep your stored items organized and stored off the ground. 

Other Quick Tips

The above tips are the most prominent ways to avoid mice invading your home. However, these tips can give you added protections from them:

• Elevate any firewood at least 18 inches off the ground and store it away from your home. 
• Add a brush strip to your exterior doors.
• Maintain your landscaping: trim branches that are close to your roof, tidy any overgrown plants and remove weeds and leaf piles.
