What to Do When You Find Mice Droppings in Your Kitchen Drawer

If you find mouse droppings in a kitchen drawer, you might feel unsettled and alarmed. This shows that mice have made it inside and want to take over your home. Acting quickly is important to prevent additional contamination and health risks. Below is a guide on what to do when you find droppings in your house.

Put on Protective Gear

Before you touch the droppings, put on protective gear. Use latex or rubber gloves and a face mask so you don’t make actual contact with them. This also prevents you from inhaling particles. Mice droppings may contain diseases, and you want to avoid being exposed to those.

Remove the Droppings

Remove the drawer and put it on a surface you can easily clean. Use paper towels to scoop up the droppings and dispose of them in a plastic bag. Do not vacuum or sweep the droppings, as this can send harmful particles into the air.

Look for More Droppings

Check other kitchen cabinets and drawers for more droppings. Mice often travel and nest in several areas, so an inspection is important. Pay attention to hidden and dark areas, as mice tend to feel safest in these locations.

Maintain Cleanliness

Keeping your kitchen tidy is essential when you want to deter mice. Store food in airtight containers, avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink overnight and quickly clean up spills. You may also want to take out trash regularly and ensure all garbage bins have tight-fitting lids.

Disinfect the Area

Use a disinfectant to clean the drawer and everything around it. Use one part bleach to 10 parts water, or choose a commercial disinfectant to sanitize the surfaces. Let the mixture set for five minutes or longer to ensure all viruses and bacteria are killed. Finish by wiping the area dry using paper towels.

Call a Professional Exterminator

If you still see droppings or other signs of mice, you may need to contact a professional exterminator. They can perform a full inspection, determine the size of the infestation, and recommend effective treatment plans to get rid of the mice.

Running across mice droppings in a kitchen drawer clearly shows you have a rodent issue. It’s best to handle it quickly.
