Sanitizing Your Home to Avoid Future Mice Infestations

Dealing with mouse infestations can be unpleasant and frustrating. After you’ve gotten rid of the pests, you need to ensure they never come back. One of the best ways to do this is by cleaning and sanitizing your home. Below are a few tips to keep your home sanitary to avoid future infestations.

Keep Food Secure

Mice want to get into your food and will look for any source of it, which can lead them to come into your home. This is why you need to properly store food in airtight containers made of thick plastic or metal. You also want to clean up spills quickly and make sure all surfaces are clean. Dispose of garbage regularly to keep it outside of the home.

Declutter the Home

Mice love to be in cluttered spots where they can hide and nest. Reduce clutter inside and outside the home to make it less inviting to these rodents. Organize spots like garages, attics, and basements using plastic bins. You also want to remove things like magazines, newspapers, and other items that make good nesting materials. Keep the yard maintained as well with firewood several feet from the home.

Keep the Kitchen Clean

The kitchen is a huge target for mice who want food and water. Clean it thoroughly and frequently. Look at areas like behind furniture, inside cabinets, and other appliances to get rid of food scraps. You also want to do dishes quickly and wipe down the countertops after you have a meal. Check and clean under and behind appliances occasionally too, Food debris can easily get caught under stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, and similar items.

Seal Entry Points

Sanitizing and cleaning are great practices, but you also want to make sure mice can’t get inside to start with. Look for any entry points and then use steel wool, mesh, or caulk to seal holes and gaps near pipes, vents, windows, and doors. You may also want to install door sweeps to outside doors so there’s no gap between the floor and the door. Finally, make sure all screens are in good shape or replace them.

When you follow the sanitization and prevention steps listed, you have less risk of future mouse infestations. Keeping your home well-maintained not only keeps out mice but also makes the space healthier to spend time in.
