Mouse Proofing

The Steps of Preventing and Controlling a Mouse

As a homeowner, one of the more unpleasant things you may have to deal with is a mice infestation in Chicago, IL. House mice ( Mus musculus) are highly adaptable and resourceful creatures, and they are common in areas populated by humans. They are prolific breeders, adept foragers, and carriers of harmful bacteria that can lead to many types of diseases in humans. For these reasons, mice are considered to be pests, and it’s crucial to prevent or control mice problems when they arise.

Don’t Attract Mice

The best mice control tip you should know is this: Don’t attract mice. In your home, mice are mainly interested in food and shelter. By denying them either of these, you should easily be able to maintain a mouse-free home. Pay particular attention to areas where food is stored and prepared. Avoid attracting mice by keeping food stored in appropriate containers such as lidded glass jars, airtight plastic containers, and metal canisters. Also, keep areas where food is stored and prepared clean.

Use Mouse Traps or Baits

For minor issues or infestations, consider using traps or baits you can purchase from your local hardware store or supermarket. Common death traps include wood-based snap traps, sticky traps, and poisoned-based traps. Humane traps are available too, which keep mice alive—if you choose to go this route, be sure to release mice as far away from your home as you can manage.

Hire a Professional

When in doubt, enlist the help of a professional pest control technician. He or she will have the tools and knowledge to properly prevent and control your mouse problem.
