Signs There Are Mice in Your Walls

Little squeaks here. Scrabbling there. Maybe even a hole or two. How can you be sure these sneaky sounds and sights mean that there are mice in your walls? If they’re there, you want to know for sure so you can get them out—fast. If it’s not mice, you don’t want to take drastic measures that won’t get rid of the true problem.

Here are some sure signs that you need a mouse exterminator in your house right away.

• Rustling or scratching sounds inside the walls
• Rustling or scratching sounds underneath the floorboards
• Droppings that resemble small, dark seeds, often in clumps or trails
• Foul, ammonia-like odor near the walls
• Nest-like creations made of soft, shredded materials (usually found in tight, dark places such as behind the stove, underneath cabinets, etc.)
• Tracks (feet and tails) on dirty or dusty floors

You’ll want to check carefully in areas where food is stored, such as cupboards, the pantry, and the basement. Check, too, in places where mice might have access to soft materials, such as in linen closets and underneath the beds.

What to Do If You Notice These Signs

If you notice one, some, or many of these signs, what are you supposed to do next? The best step is to call an exterminator—they’ll be able to take care of the problem asap instead of you having a go at it and only getting the job half done.

An exterminator will take care of the problem without extraneous damage to your home, floors, or walls. If you try to take care of the problem on your own, you might end up with plenty of holes, knocked-out walls, and still the same number of pests.

Simply line the traps with a bit of peanut butter and put them where you think the mice are most active.
