A Home Inspection Checklist to Prevent Reinvasion

You got rid of the mice. Good. But here’s where a lot of homeowners mess up: they relax too soon. In Chicago, mice don’t forget a good address. If you don’t lock things down properly, they’ll be back like they never left. This is your home inspection checklist to prevent reinvasion.

Start With the Perimeter

Everything begins outside. Walk your home like you’re casing it, because you can bet that mice have already done that.

Look for things like:

  • Gaps around pipes, cables, and utility lines
  • Cracks in brick, siding, or foundation walls
  • Loose mortar or deteriorating sealant
  • Openings near vents or exhaust ports

If you can see daylight or feel a draft, that’s a problem. Seal it with rodent-resistant materials, not just whatever caulk you’ve got laying around.

Doors and Windows Don’t Get a Pass

Doors are a favorite comeback route, so they’re part of this home inspection checklist.

Inspect:

  • Door sweeps for wear or gaps
  • Frames for separation or warping
  • Basement and garage doors especially

Windows matter too. Make sure screens are intact, and frames are sealed. Window wells should be clear of debris and properly covered.

Garages and Storage Areas

Mice love to use garages to stage their next move.

Look for:

  • Gaps at the base of garage doors
  • Clutter stacked against walls
  • Open food sources like birdseed or pet food

Inside Walls and High-Risk Rooms

Now head indoors. Focus on kitchens, basements, and utility rooms.

Check:

  • Behind stoves and refrigerators
  • Under sinks where pipes enter walls
  • Around water heaters and furnaces
  • Along baseboards for droppings or grease marks

Attics and Crawl Spaces

Most people skip these. Mice don’t. Make sure they’re part of your home inspection checklist.

Inspect for:

  • Chewed insulation
  • Nesting material
  • Droppings or trails
  • Unscreened attic vents

Food and Habits Matter More Than You Think

You can seal every hole and still invite mice back if you don’t correct your family’s bad habits.

Lock it down by:

  • Don’t store any food in containers that aren’t airtight
  • Don’t leave pet food out at night
  • Clean things up right away
  • Taking trash out regularly

Seasonal Changes Require Repeat Inspections

Chicago homes shift with the seasons. Freeze-thaw cycles open new gaps every year. What was sealed last spring might not hold by winter.

Call in Backup

Getting rid of mice is one thing. Keeping them out is another. Reinvasion happens when homeowners stop paying attention.

To help prevent that fate, run this home inspection checklist, stay sharp, and don’t give mice a second invitation. If you think you’re dealing with a reinvasion or you’ve never gotten rid of the mice in the first place, get in touch with Mice Mob Exterminators.
