How Seasonal Weather Variations in Chicago Affect Mice Behavior & Infestation Risk

Winter

Let’s start with winter, which is the big season for mouse migration. When that Lake Michigan wind cuts through your coat and the alleys start icing over, mice are on the move. They’re looking for food and shelter, and your home is basically the Ritz-Carlton compared to the streets.

In older Chicago homes, especially those with basements or boiler rooms, mice slip in through cracks in the foundation and gaps in siding that aren’t properly sealed. Once inside, they find cozy nesting spots near heat sources and set up shop and breed all winter long.

Spring

When spring finally hits, everything wakes up, including the mice. As the temperature rises, they start breeding fast. A single female can have half a dozen litters a year, and spring is when it really kicks off.

Summer

By summer, most mice move their base of operations outside. They nest in garages, sheds, around trash cans, or in overgrown corners of the yard. Warm weather means more garbage and more risk. Chicago alleys become all-you-can-eat buffets, and that activity eventually spills over into nearby homes and restaurants.

Fall

Fall in Chicago is beautiful, but it’s also prime time for what we call “The Great Mouse Return.” As temperatures start to dip, mice start scouting for winter housing. They’ll squeeze in anywhere they can get a paw in. If you wait until the first cold snap to deal with it, you’re already too late.
