Worried about mice invading your home? They’re sneaky. By the time you see one scurrying across the floor, you probably already have a problem.
The key to avoiding a full-blown infestation (and all the problems that come with that) is catching the signs early. You need to spot them before they’ve set up house in your walls and started multiplying.
Not sure how to do that? Just follow these steps.
- First, look for droppings. Mice leave behind tiny, dark pellets in hidden corners, behind appliances, or inside kitchen cabinets and drawers. If you’re seeing fresh droppings regularly, mice are active in your home.
- Next, check for other signs, like:
- Gnaw marks: Mice teeth never stop growing, so they constantly chew on things to keep them filed down. You might notice small bite marks on food packaging, wooden furniture, or even electrical wires (that’s a serious fire hazard, by the way).
- Scratching at night: This means they’re probably working away inside your walls or attic. Mice are nocturnal, so they’re most active when you’re winding down for the night. Scratching, scampering, or even tiny squeaks coming from the walls, ceiling, or under the floorboards are all bad signs.
- Greasy smudge marks along baseboards: Mice follow the same paths over and over, rubbing their fur against surfaces as they travel. Over time, this leaves behind dirty streaks that can clue you in on their favorite routes.
- Strange smells: A strong, musty odor, especially in enclosed spaces, can mean there’s a mouse nest nearby. If the smell is really strong, you might even be dealing with a dead rodent stuck somewhere inside your walls or floors.
- Finding shredded paper, fabric, or insulation? That’s nesting material. Mice love to burrow into soft, hidden areas where they can breed without being disturbed. If you come across a small pile of finely chewed debris in a quiet corner, you’re probably looking at a nest in progress.
- Act fast. A single pair of mice can produce dozens of offspring in just a few months, turning a minor issue into a major problem. Start by sealing up entry points and removing food sources.
