Mice Infestation

7 Proven Ways to Prevent Mice from Entering Your Home

If you’ve ever heard the telltale scurry of tiny feet or found a chewed-up cereal box in your pantry, you know how resourceful mice can be. They’re experts at squeezing through the smallest of gaps and turning any innocent-looking nook into their hideaway. But with a little diligence and the right steps, you can keep your home off their radar.

Here are seven proven ways to stop mice before they even think about moving in:

1. Seal the Entry Points

Mice can slip through a hole as small as a dime. Inspect your home for cracks, gaps, and crevices around doors, windows, and foundations. Use steel wool to seal these spots—mice can’t chew through steel. Pay close attention to areas where pipes and wires enter your home.

2. Install Door Sweeps and Weather Stripping

Your doors are open invitations if they don’t close tightly. Adding door sweeps and weather stripping not only keeps the cold out but also blocks mice from squeezing under.

3. Secure the Food Supply

Mice will eat anything, and your kitchen is their jackpot. Store food in airtight containers, clean up crumbs and spills right away, and don’t leave pet food sitting out overnight. These simple habits cut off their main reason for hanging around.

4. Clean Up the Yard

Your yard might be full of hiding spots that mice love. Keep firewood stacked at least 20 feet away from your home, trim overgrown bushes, and clear away leaf piles. A neat yard creates fewer opportunities for mice to get close to your house.

5. Take Out the Trash (Correctly)

A trashcan with a loose lid is a buffet for mice. Use trashcans with tight-fitting lids and take out the garbage regularly. If you store trash outside, make sure it’s far from your house and that rodents can’t get into it.

6. Eliminate Standing Water

Mice need water as much as food. Fix leaky pipes, empty out clogged gutters, and double-check that your drains work properly. A dry home is far less appealing to rodents.

7. Keep an Eye on Unused Spaces

Basements, attics, and garages are prime spots for mice because they’re quiet and often overlooked. Regularly inspect these areas, declutter them, and check for signs that mice have moved in, like droppings or chew marks.

By taking these steps, you’re not just preventing mice. You’re creating a healthier, safer, and more resilient home. Because when it comes to sharing your space, some guests just aren’t worth the risk. At Mice Mob, we know the signs to look for and can help you spot (and handle) mice in your home.
