Mice Infestation

Signs You Might Have Mice in Your Office Building

Office buildings, especially in cities, are prime locations for mouse infestations. Plenty of people are around to leave debris and food, there are lots of places to hide, and entry points are abundant—the perfect conditions for rodents. Unfortunately, humans and mice can’t live together harmoniously indoors because rodents can create unhealthy, unhygienic environments, carry diseases, and cause allergic reactions.

The Importance of Early Detection

How do you know mice are infesting your office building? Here are a few signs. The earlier detection, the more likely you can eradicate an infestation before it gets too bad.

  • Visible Droppings

Mice poop…a lot. Visible droppings are among the most common, apparent signs of a mouse infestation. They leave behind small, dark droppings that are pellet-like and numerous. Mice poop on the go; ergo, you may find droppings spaced several inches in the same location, like kitchen drawers and cabinets.

  • Gnaw Marks and Chewed Belongings

Mice instinctively need to chew on everything because their teeth are constantly growing. Gnawing on wood or hard surfaces is preferred, but they can also shred electrical wiring, chew through cardboard, plastic, and corkboard, and rip through insulation, ventilation, or pipes.

  • Scratching and Scurrying Noises

Mice are most active at night, so the late-night crews may hear scurrying, scratching, or running through ductwork or hard surfaces. This sound indicates movement, usually when mice seek food or a place to nest and reproduce.

  • Nests Made from Office Materials

Like birds, mice love to create nests from anything they can find, so office materials, like tiny shreds of paperwork and cardboard scraps, are fair game. Storage rooms, filing cabinets, and small holes in warehouse walls are prime locations for mice nests.

  • Unpleasant Odors

When a rodent infestation becomes severe, it creates a musky, unpleasant odor. It lingers, is hard to ignore, and may cause an allergic reaction in some people. Once the infestation is under control, it may take weeks, or even months, for the smell to dissipate.

  • Unexplained Footprints and Smudge Marks

Mouse fur is naturally sleek and greasy, helping mice get through small spaces. However, mice can also leave smudge marks and footprints on dusty surfaces.
