How the Landscaping Choices You Make Can Invite or Deter Mice

You take pride in your home, in the well-trimmed lawn, the gorgeous flower beds, and maybe even a little patio where you grill up some Italian sausage on the weekends. But here’s the thing: while you’re making your yard look nice, you might be setting out the welcome mat for mice without even knowing it.

The Yard: A Mouse’s First Stop

Let’s start with what most homeowners don’t realize: mice love yards. Your lawn and garden give them everything they need: cover while moving in, shelter in a pinch, food, and quick escape routes.

Here’s how:

  • Tall grass and thick shrubs: These give mice perfect hiding spots. They can move around without being seen by you or predators.
  • Piles of leaves or firewood: To you, it’s storage. To them, it’s prime real estate.
  • Bird feeders and seed spills: You’re trying to help the birds, but you’re feeding the mice, too. They’re not picky; spilled sunflower seeds are a five-star meal.
  • Standing water: A puddle or a birdbath can keep them hydrated through the hot Chicago summer.

Landscaping That Keeps Mice Away

Don’t worry, you don’t have to pave your whole yard. A few smart landscaping moves can make a big difference in keeping rodents away.

  1. Keep grass trimmed short. Mice don’t like open spaces. Short lawns give them nowhere to hide.
  2. Trim shrubs and plants near your home’s foundation. Leave at least a foot of space between plants and your house to block rodent runways.
  3. Store firewood up and away. Keep stacks at least 18 inches off the ground and 20 feet from the house.
  4. Use gravel or stone borders. Mice hate walking across rough, open areas because it makes them easy targets for predators.
  5. Clean up garden debris. Fallen fruit, seeds, and leaves are like an all-you-can-eat buffet for rodents.

A Little Professional Help Never Hurts

Even the best-kept yards can attract mice. That’s why it pays to have professionals who know how to read the signs and set up defenses before it becomes a full-blown problem.

At Mice Mob Exterminators, we know this city’s homes and yards inside and out. We’ll inspect your property and give you a plan to keep the rodents out.

The Right Landscaping Is an Active Deterrent

Your landscaping can say a lot about you, but it can also say a lot to the mice. Keep it, trimmed and well-maintained, and they’ll move on to easier pickings. Ignore it, and before you know it, they’ll be moving in under your deck or right into your basement.

So do yourself a favor: make your yard a no-go zone for rodents. And if you think you’ve already got some uninvited guests, call Mice Mob Exterminators. We’ll clear them out and make sure they don’t come crawling back.
