Seasonal Pest Control: Preparing Your Home for Winter Rodent Activity

When the temperature drops, mice start looking for a warm place to ride out the winter. Just like humans, they need a few specific things: water, warmth, food, and water. And because of that, your home is high on their list.

The bad news is that if you don’t take the right precautions before the cold sets in, you might find yourself with some uninvited winter guests. The good news? It’s not as hard to prevent mice and other rodents if you know the steps to take.

Start by sealing up entry points. Mice can squeeze tiny gaps, so check your home’s exterior for cracks, holes, and openings. Pay close attention to areas where things enter your home (vent pipes and phone or TV cables, for instance). These are common weak spots. Use steel wool and caulk to block any gaps, and install door sweeps to keep mice from sneaking in under doors.

Next, focus on food sources. As winter approaches, food gets scarce and mice become even more determined to find more, so don’t make it easy for them. Skip cardboard and plastic bags for food storage, clean up spills immediately, and don’t let the trash build up. If you have a pet, don’t leave food out overnight ,and clean up any debris quickly. You should also store pet food in a sealed plastic container.

Understand that your home’s clutter can work against you. Mice love to nest in warm, undisturbed places, so winter is the perfect time to get rid of things you don’t need or aren’t using. Organize storage areas, get rid of unnecessary boxes, and keep basements and attics clean. If you’re storing holiday decorations or seasonal clothing, use plastic bins instead of cardboard (mice can chew right through the cardboard with ease).

Outside, make sure your yard isn’t inviting rodents in. Fall’s a great time to double down on yard work. Trim back shrubs, rake up leaves, and store firewood well away from your home. Remember, mice are always looking for shelter, and a messy yard gives them plenty of options.

Winter is the peak season for rodent invasions, but a little preparation can go a long way. There’s no reason that the cold should make them choose your home. Follow the simple steps we’ve outlined here and remember that the goal is simple: make your home as unappealing to mice as possible, so they stay out in the cold where they belong.
